Within American and Canadian English, the term furnace is used to describe a device for heating. The word emerges from the Latin word for oven – fornax. In British English, heater or boiler is used instead and the word furnace is used exclusively to define an industrial furnace. An industrial furnace can smelt. These structures use an intermediary distribution system to give off heat. Steam, hot water and air are the most common systems. With air convection, fans circulate air throughout the rooms of the house. At the same time, it cold air is pulled into the device and reheated before being re released. Air can also be circulated through ductwork, which is sheet metal or plastic flex duct. An advantage of an air system is that an air conditioning system can be easily installed by simply attaching a cooling coil to the device. Systems that utilize steam and hot water are often called boilers. Boilers eliminate the need for a separate water heater because they can produce hot water for the household. If the boiler breaks down it will eliminate the heating and domestic hot water.
In metallurgy, several specialized structures are used. Some are used for smelting. An example is the blast furnace, which can reduce iron ore to pig iron. There are also steelmaking furnaces such as puddling, basic oxygen and electric induction. Metallurgical devices are often used in foundries to remelt metal. Some can heat treat metal for slitting and rolling mills. Vacuum furnaces can heat metal materials for brazing, sintering and other processes.
An industrial furnace has the ability to serve as a reactor or create heat for a specific process. It will vary in appearance. The heating duty, function, method of introducing air and fuel type will influence its framework.
There are different sections of these devices: radiant, convection, soot blower, burner and flue gas stack. The set up of each of these areas may be different, but they all serve the same functions. Overall, the most important design element for these structures is insulation. Adequate insulation will prevent extreme heat loss.
