I agree on the “”at first”"” pricey thought but once I used one it was actually priceless! Had a gate valve go bad and wanted to replace it with a ball valve so I could do more work down stream. That old bread trick is for the birds. After a few hours of trying to get solder to not pinhole leak I got me a pair of straight couplers. I cut out a 18″ section of that line with the ball valve in the middle. Bench soldered it, added 2 straight Sharkbite couplers. Done in only 10 minutes.

Try doing my previous mentioned valve replacent with compression fitting when your flush against a wall! You can actually cap off a gate valve that dont seal 100% and is wet and under pressure in literally seconds. Once againthey = a priceless no brainer. Of course I woundnt do a whole job with them – just the nasty spots!

additionally you can easily cap off one half of a line with the rig mentioned below- then open a lowest drain or faucet and duck tape on a wet vac hose to evacuate the line. Lets you solder dry and also under a negative pressure helping suck teh solder in teh joint!
