not being the professional, i was told to braze 3/4″ soft copper for a better connection when i had to repair a slab leak and mapp was good for it. after 5 minutes of kneeling i said F it! took a piece of pipe and a elbow to the work bench and it still took time to get it to flow. the copper became so soft i wondered if brazing was the way to go. said F it again and took out the solder.

Yeah, brazing 15% with mapp gas just can’t be done. Oxy-acetylene is the only way to go.

The ONLY way to solder (or braze) copper is by CLEANING it very thourogly… That is the key factor, clean it and use a proper flux of some kind, There is really nothing to it.
    This film is nerve wrecking….

MAPP or better still get ur self an LPG set up…burns a little cooler than MAPP but you can refill it using a BBQ LPG tank @ home and save money…but b careful. I use 2% yellow stick silver solder seems to be OK with MAPP…you gotta heat the pipe well though. Soft silver is OK but not as strong as 2% or above. Avoid using soft solder in walls for that reason.

I did this video as a joke and to show that you can’t use mapp gas to braze 15 percent.

    Hello Dr. Zarkloff,

i had exactly the same problem mit with this damn propan/butan burners. and i had used a 55 percent for it. after 10 minutes notthing happend, the copper was going still black like yours. Now i have bought a O² + Propan burner, its not so professional like yours bud after one minute i have my work nicley done. This “mappgas” burners are still for soft brazing not hard brazing.

Sorry for my bad english im from bavarian ;)

    Tip too damn small!

Either buy a bigger tip, or buy a second tip/MAPP combo, and duct tape the bottles together.

Remember that you’re working w/ copper, which conducts the heat away like nobody’s business.

The copper is ready to accept the braze when glowing dull red (might not see it in dayilght, though).

I use braze exclusively on the copper in my stills.

first of all WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR VOICE, btw i have a mapp gas and oxygen torch kit it works great, i got it runnings farm and fleet, they also have it at menards, and home depot, it almost as hot as oxy-acytlenyne

  17. DrZarkloff says:

lol. The video is running in like twice the normal speed. I’ll be making a video sometime this week using a great new propane product.

  18. denis258 says:

    Dr Z,
I just found your videos and love ‘em. Thanks. I saw a few comments about the o2/mapp torches available at home depot. What is your opinion of these for brazing refrigeration copper? I thought it might be a good compact back up if your oxy/acetylene torch ran out on a job. Thanks.

  19. DrZarkloff says:

Thanks for watching. I’ve still to find an alternative to oxy/acetylene for brazing. I plan to soon do a review on a new product that could revolutionise the entire brazing process. It’s a glue that can be used for copper, aluminium and brass. It’s already been approved for HVAC use. It’s called HVAC Super Pro.

I am teaching myself brazing for artistic endeavors. A bronze braze on steel is rather appealing visuallly. I do all my work on fire bricks. These reflect heat and the heat splashes back on the work. Copper is amazing in its ability to disipate heat. You need to focus the heat on your joint. Ceramic fiber blankets for kilns or fire brick should do the trick.

  22. MrMultitool says:

I sometimes use mapp gas for repairs but i’ve never had the problem you’re showing.Mapp gas is not supposed to be inverted because it will separate. Its not oxy/acetylene but sometimes it will get you by.Tell us more about the new compound for making repairs.

  23. jonjon2121nyc says:

dude. youll be there all day with no results. those joints were even interconnected properly causing a bad heat transfer. your flame temp is not hot enough. i can guarantee that after that whole can of mapp gas u wasted that the seal would not hold under a vacuum.

you will never get that copper hot enough with that mapp gas set up!
